I hope you are well and that you’ve had a wonderful start to 2018. On behalf of the Media RING Board I would like to thank you for your support to date, and let you know how excited we are to be kicking 2018 off with two Member Connect Events in February and March!
This year you’ll be hearing more from us. We’re organising opportunities for networking, opportunities for learning and opportunities for collaboration. Every month there will be a Member Connect Event or newsletter. All of this will be focused around how we can develop and deliver employment opportunities for and with Indigenous Australians in front of, and behind the camera.
With the focus of National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) being Don’t Keep History a Mystery and the theme of NAIDOC Week (8 – 15 July) being Because of her, we can! we are well placed to work together to reflect on the past and work to raise awareness of these important milestones with the wider Australian community. On 13 February 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples, particularly to the Stolen Generations whose lives had been blighted by past government policies of forced child removal and Indigenous assimilation. Next week marks The Apology’s tenth anniversary.
The journey to a national apology began with the Bringing Them Home report – the findings of an inquiry instigated by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in 1995.
Our newsrooms across the Media RING network are preparing coverage on events marking the anniversary. NITV’s programming will include a special NITV News bulletin from Parliament House and the live stream of The Healing Foundation Apology Concert on the evening of 13February.
Our first Member Connect Event is next week and is a screening of After The Apology. Check out the rest of the newsletter for details.
It’s a really exciting time to be a part of the Media RING and I look forward to seeing you at our Member Connect Events in February and March.
